NHL Weekly Highlights (8/10-8/16)

The NHL’s Eastern and Western Conference Quarter-finals get underway Tuesday, this is the place to watch highlights and game recaps of the action.

Sunday (8/16)

Barzal’s OT marker gives Isles commanding 3-0 series edge

Already up 2-0 in the series, the Isles were heading into OT searching for the goal that would give them a commanding 3-0 series edge over the Washington Capitals. Just over 4 minutes into OT, Jordan Eberle found Matt Barzal and hit him with a pass behind the Capitals defense that put him on a breakaway and Barzal made a nifty move to his backhand and buried the OT winner giving the Isles the 2-1 win and 3-0 series lead.

The Stars tie it late and bury OT winner to knot their series with Flames at 2-2

Game 4 between the Flames and Stars saw a combined 9 goals scored and featured all sorts of highlights. Many of those highlights involved Joe Pavelski who tied the game at 4 with just 12 seconds left in regulation and not only was that the tying goal but it was his 3rd of the game giving him a hat-trick. In overtime, the Stars were able to get the goal they desperately needed to tie the series from John Klingberg. Game 5 is set for Tuesday, with the teams tied at two games apiece.

The Blackhawks entered Game 4 trailing 3-0 in their series against the Golden Knights and were on the brink of elimination. The Blackhawks were desperate for a strong start to Game 4 and got one with two 1st period goals from Caggiula and Highmore. The Golden Knights would respond with a 1st period goal of their own but the Hawks entered the 2nd period up 2-1. In the 2nd and 3rd periods, the Knights would carry much of the play firing a total of 49 shots on Corey Crawford but he would not allow a tying goal and an empty-netter late in the 3rd would secure a 3-1 Hawks win and force a Game 5 Tuesday night.

Brayden Schenn buries an OT breakaway winner to cut Blues series deficit to 2-1

Trailing 2-0 in the series to the Vancouver Canucks, the St. Louis Blues were desperate to avoid falling into a 3-0 series hole. Through 2 periods the Blues wee tied 2-2 with the Canucks and the score stayed that way at the end of the 3rd meaning the two teams would need OT. Late in the 1st overtime Brayden Schenn buried a breakaway chance to give the Blues a 3-2 win and cut their series deficit to 2-1.

Saturday (8/15)

Halak reaches back and makes a goal-line stop to keep the game scoreless

Halak robs Jordan Staal on the goal-line to keep Game 3 scoreless

Rantanen’s blast pinballs off two Coyotes and gets past Kuemper

With less than a minute left in the 3rd period, Mikko Rantanen found the back of the net with a shot that pinballed off two Coyote skates. Unfortunately, the goal came a little too late as the Yotes were still leading 3-2 and added a 2nd empty-net goal shortly after to win the game 4-2.

The Bolts get by the Jackets to take 2-1 series lead

With the series tied at a game apiece, both the Bolts and the Jackets were looking for a Game 3 win and 2-1 series edge. The Lightning positioned themselves well for a win as they carried a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period and despite an early 3rd-period goal from the Jackets. the Bolts held on for the 3-2 win and took the 2-1 series edge.

Friday (8/14)

Burakovsky’s late goal propels the Avs to a 2-0 series lead

Entering the 3rd period tied at 2 the Avs were looking for a goal with the hopes of extending their series lead to 2 games to zero. As the 3rd period was drawing to a close the Avs got their chance when Nazem Kadri through a shot on net that ended up right on Andre Burakovsky’s stick and he buried it with under 3 minutes left in the 3rd. The Avs held o to win 3-2 and took the commanding 2-0 series lead over the Yotes.

Price Shuts Out Flyers as Habs tie series at 1

After losing Game 1 by a score of 2-1, the Canadiens were hungry to tie the series with a Game 2 victory. They did just that as they scored 5 goals and got a 30 save shoutout from their elite netminder Carey Price.

Horvat scores the OT winner to give the Nucks a 2-0 series edge

After blowing a 3-1 lead in the 3rd period thanks to a tying goal from Jaden Schwartz with 7 seconds left the Nucks and Blues were heading for OT. In Overtime, Quinn Hughes found Bo Horvat streaking in the neutral zone and Horvat buried the game-winner through Binnington’s five-hole to lift the Canucks to a 4-3 win and 2-0 series lead.

Ovi scores 56 seconds into Game 2 vs the Isles

Alex Ovechkin scored his first of 2 goals in Game 2 56 seconds into the 1st period to give the Caps the early lead but the Isles fought back with two goals of their own and after Ovi’s tying goal in the 2nd period the Isles scored 3 unanswered to top the Caps 5-2 and jump out to the 2-0 series edge.

Brodie’s rocket from the point doubles the Flames lead in the 3rd

T.J Brodie doubled the Flames lead to 2-0 in the 3rd period of Game 3 against the Stars Friday night to give the Flames a much-needed insurance marker. Cam Talbot wouldn’t need that insurance marker though as he shutout the Stars en route to the Flames 2-0 victory which propelled them to a 2-1 series lead.

Thursday (8/13)

Wennberg undresses Shatttenkirk and buries a beauty to extend the Jackets lead to 2 goals

With the Jackets trailing in the series 1-0 following their crushing 5OT loss in Game 1, they were desperate for a Game 2 win and were up 2-1 mid-way through the 3rd period. Captain Nick Foligno started a play by feeding Liam Foudy who hit Alexander Wennberg streaking into the Lightning zone. It was all Wennberg from there as he undressed Shattenkirk with a deke between his legs and dove to put the puck past Vailevskiy and give the Jackets a 3-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish as they tied the series at a game apiece.

With the Blackhawks and Knights still tied at 3 after a scoreless 3rd period, the two teams were set for an OT period in which the first goal would decide the winner. Just 7 minutes into OT Paul Stastny found Reilly Smith out front with a pass from the corner, that Smith deflected past Corey Crawford to give the Knights the OT win and 2-0 series lead over the Hawks.

The Stars top the Flames in a high scoring affair to even the series at 1 game

After leading 3-1 and 4-2 at different stages in the 2nd period, the Stars were tied 4-4 with the Flames late in the 3rd thanks to Flames goals from Tobias Rieder and Sam Bennett. As the game entered the final minute it appeared the two teams were headed for overtime but the Stars had other plans. Jamie Oleksiak buried the go-ahead goal with 40 seconds left in the 3rd on a sweet cross-ice feed from Corey Perry. The Stars would hold on in the final seconds to win the game 5-4 and knot the series at a 1-1 tie.

Wednesday (8/12)

B’s top the Canes in 2OT took take 1-0 series lead

The 4th seeded B’s faced off against the 5th seeded Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of their 1st round matchup Wednesday afternoon. It was a back and forth affair in regulation with the team exchanging blows leaving the game tied at 3 after 3 periods. After a scoreless OT in which the Bruins dictated the play, Patrice Bergeron buried the 2OT winner just over a minute in to give the B’s the 4-3 win and 1-0 series lead.

Brock Nelson takes advantage of Holtby turnover and feeds Bailey for the go-ahead goal

After trailing 2-0 to the Caps late in the 2nd period the Islanders would put up 4 unanswered goals including the go-ahead goal shorthanded created by a Holtby turnover that Brock Nelson capitalized on by feeding Josh Baley for a one-time goal.

The Avs score 2 goals in 10 seconds to break their scoreless tie with the Yotes

In the late stages of the 3rd period, Darcy Kuemper was keeping his Yotes at a scoreless tie despite being shelled with shots. With just under 7 minutes left in the 3rd both Nazem Kadri and J.T Compher solved Kuemper to put the Avs up 2-0 and a 3rd goal a minute late secured the win for the Avs by a score of 3-0.

Bo Horvat slips past the Blues defense to bury a beauty of a goal

After jumping out to a 3-2 lead on a goal by Troy Stecher early in the 3rd period, the Canucks were looking for an insurance goal and got one when Bo Horvat flew past the Blues defense and buried a beautiful goal to put the Canucks up 4-2. A last-minute goal by J.T Miller added insult to injury as the Canucks topped the Blues 5-2 and jumped out to a 1-0 series lead.

Tuesday (8/11)

Marathon Game 1 between Jackets and Lightning needs 5OT

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets met in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals matchup Tuesday at 3 E.T. The two times were tied at 2 goals after 3 periods of play meaning this game would need OT. This game would not be solved in the first OT, in fact, this game would require 5 OT’s and become the 4th longest playoff game in NHL history with Joonas Korpisalo making 85 saves, the most in playoff history. Unfortunately, Korpisalo’s heroic effort would go unrewarded as Brayden Point scored the game-winner for the Bolts halfway through the 5th OT to lift the Bolts to a 1-0 series lead.

Stars score two in 9 seconds to knot their game vs. Flames

Trailing 2-0 about halfway through the 2nd period the Stars needed a goal. They got one from Denis Gurianov to cut the deficit to 2-1 and just 9 seconds later Jamie Benn tied the game at 2 to swing all the momentum in their favor. Rasmus Andersson put the Flames back up late in the 2nd and Cam Talbot shut the door in the 3rd to give the Flames the 3-2 win and 1-0 series lead.

Shea Theodore blows a wrister by Crawford to put the Knights on the board

The Knights and Blackhawks met for Game 1 of their 1st round matchup Tuesday night with each team looking to take a 1-0 series lead. After a scoreless 1st period, Shea Theodore put the Knights on the board with a bullet he sent past Corey Crawford and William Carrier doubled the lead 2 minutes later. A Blackhawks goal cut the lead in half, but 2 3rd period goals from Reilly Smith gave the Knights a 4-1 win and 1-0 series lead.

Monday (8/10)
